Reaping efficiencies from data science university case study

Utilising existing data to drive time efficiencies.

One of the newest recruits in our Middelburg office has been working with the team to help utilise existing data to develop predictive models and drive time efficiencies for our colleagues.

Amjad Hwidy, originally from Syria and now living in the Netherlands, is a part-time Data Scientist with our ModuSpec team while also studying at Utrecht University.

Amjad conducted his Bachelor final project at ModuSpec, supervised by his mentors Gerard Gaal from ModuSpec and Greg Elliott from HZ University of Applied Sciences. His final project focused on utilising data-driven insights and allowing our specialists to unlock the potential of their wealth of inspection data and gain deeper insights.

Ultimately, the initial project has helped transition historical inspection reports into a predictive model. This model helps inspectors, rig owners, and associated teams anticipate the severity of equipment issues, enabling proactive maintenance and minimising the risk of critical equipment failures.

Despite challenges like imbalanced class distributions, the model achieved over 80% accuracy in tests – highlighting the potential of machine learning to transform rig inspections while setting the foundation for digital transformation at ModuSpec.

In a recent project Amjad automated the conversion of CSV data into Excel reports for client use that has reduced report preparation time from up to two hours to just one minute, significantly enhancing productivity for colleagues.

Amjad is thoroughly enjoying his time with the team, applying theories to real-life solutions.

He said: “Working at ModuSpec has been an invaluable experience. It has allowed me to bridge the gap between academic concepts and practical applications, deepening my understanding of data science. Applying these theories to real-world challenges, such as rig inspections and data processing, has been both fulfilling and instrumental in helping me develop professionally.

“The supportive environment and the willingness of ModuSpec to embrace modern technologies have been critical in enabling me to deliver impactful solutions. The mentorship and guidance from colleagues and managers like Gerard Gaal and Peter Wilke have greatly enhanced my learning and contributions.”

Gerard added that Amjad’s work has been extremely well received within the team.

Gerard said: “Amjad made an immediate impact with his first project, where he designed and implemented an automated Python process to convert raw data exports into Excel worksheets. His solution not only met our clients’ expectations but also reduced processing time from up to two hours to just one minute.

“Amjad’s smart, detail-oriented approach, combined with his ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders, demonstrates his value as a data scientist who excels on every level. I’m thrilled with the results he delivered in such a short time.”
