Iain Cruickshank

Our subject matter experts (SMEs) are at the heart of the insights, innovation and integrity that define our work. Through our SME spotlight series, we're proud to highlight the people behind the expertise. Next we feature Iain Cruickshank, based in our Aberdeen office.

Name: Iain Cruickshank

Role: Technical Specialist

Years of experience and time with ModuSpec: I’ve been working in the oil industry for 28 years, including 11 years with ModuSpec. I started with ModuSpec in 2014 as a Mechanical Surveyor and was promoted to Technical Specialist in 2018.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

A typical day usually starts with reviewing daily reports to keep track of project progress and handling any technical questions from surveyors or clients. Much of my day is then about planning ahead, preparing inspection schedules, putting together work packages and making sure everything lines up with the client’s requirements and project timelines. I spend a lot of time working with the team on preparing technical proposals and supporting business development attending client meetings to discuss opportunities and projects. I also review final reports to ensure quality and consistency and participate in internal business initiatives such as testing and improving our Argus Inspection.

What are your key tasks or responsibilities?

I help manage and support rig intake and inspection projects. A big part of my role is providing technical advice on equipment condition, reliability and compliance, basically making sure everything meets the right standards and is safe to use. I work closely with clients, operators, and contractors to answer technical questions, align scopes and keep everyone on the same page. I’m also involved in planning and preparing work packs, inspection schedules, test plans, and all the paperwork needed to get projects moving. From planning and mobilisation through to fieldwork and reporting, I make sure our deliverables are accurate, consistent and on time. When projects wrap up, I peer-review reports and deliverables to ensure they meet ModuSpec’s quality standards. I also support business development by preparing proposals, meeting clients, and showcasing how we can help. I like keeping up with new technology and industry changes and I get involved in testing and improving internal tools like Argus Inspection to make our processes smoother.

Who do you collaborate with most often? I work closely with the technical team, operations team, deliverables, business development team, surveyors and clients. They are all connected therefore collaborating with everyone equally is key to keeping projects running smoothly.

What do you enjoy most about your job, team or ModuSpec culture? What I enjoy most is seeing a project run smoothly from start to finish and hearing that the client had a positive experience working with ModuSpec.

Are you a member of any industry organisations? I am a member of the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE), the Bureau of Engineering Surveyors (BES) and the Engineering Council.

Any fun facts, hobbies, or something your colleagues might not know about you?

When I'm not working, you'll often find me cycling remote trails throughout Scotland and photographing the wild landscapes.
