Topdrive and drilling equipment inspection & removal

Rig

Client: South Korean industry conglomerate

Asset type: SHWE platform

Location: Myanmar

ModuSpec was contracted to mobilise and manage a team to procure all the equipment necessary to safely remove remaining drilling equipment on the production platform which had completed drilling activities three years previously.

We conducted an inspection of the equipment before providing a risk assessment and a method with costing for removal of equipment as necessary. This work needed to be carried out safely while the production side of the platform remained operational.

Various factors meant that the work would be carried out during monsoon season and the method, schedules and procedures therefore needed to be adjusted. This presented many challenges as 70% of the scope involved utilising a rope access team working at height in the derrick, and there was a safety limit of 25kts wind speed. Due to the adverse conditions, the team lost approximately three days.

The equipment had not been maintained in approximately three years and had severe corrosion in places, which combined with the humid conditions, monsoon season and ongoing activity by the production part of the platform, caused challenges for the team.

Results: The team involved conducted the necessary risk assessments, providing and discussing safe work methods and procedures and coordinating the available workforce to complete all necessary work without any incidents.
