Our subject matter experts (SMEs) are at the heart of the insights, innovation and integrity that define our work. Through our SME spotlight series, we're proud to highlight the people behind the expertise. Next we feature Giulio De Liso - Technical Specialist attached to our Singapore office.

Name: Giulio De Liso

Role: Technical Specialist

Years of experience and time with ModuSpec: With more than 35 years of experience across the offshore oil and gas and marine sectors, I have built a strong specialisation in electrical power systems, control systems, drilling equipment, DP systems, commissioning, inspections, technical assurance and asset condition evaluation. I have been supporting ModuSpec assignments since 2011.

What does a typical workday look like for you? My typical day is centred on reviewing rig condition, system readiness and operational risk from a technical perspective. This includes assessing survey findings, verifying compliance with applicable standards and regulations, reviewing the supporting evidence and assisting teams in the resolution of service-readiness matters. A substantial part of my work is also devoted to refining reports and deliverables, to ensure that technical observations are translated into clear conclusions and practical, actionable recommendations for clients.

What are your key tasks or responsibilities? I support technical assessments of offshore and onshore drilling units and related assets. My responsibilities include selection surveys, condition assessments, reactivation-readiness reviews, rig intake activities, preparation of acceptance tests and broader technical assurance assignments. My role is to ensure that critical systems are not only in place, but also properly maintained and supported by appropriate testing, documentation and control measures. In addition, I review reports, contribute to risk-based conclusions and develop recommendations intended to support both operational teams and management in their decision-making. I also conduct surveys in the field, especially for specific challenging tasks.

Who do you collaborate with most often? I work closely with ModuSpec surveyors, technical specialists, operations and deliverables teams, client representatives, rig management, and vessel crews. Effective collaboration across these groups is essential to ensure that technical concerns are communicated clearly, addressed in a timely and appropriate manner and reported in a balanced, constructive and technically sound way.

What do you enjoy most about your job, team or ModuSpec/Well Academy culture? What I appreciate most is the opportunity to apply engineering judgement in practical situations and to help clients gain a clear understanding of the true condition, limitations and capabilities of their assets. I also value ModuSpec’s strong emphasis on technical independence, experience-based assessment and clear reporting, particularly on projects where decisions may have significant operational and commercial implications.

Are you a member of any industry organisations? IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)

Any fun facts, hobbies or something your colleagues might not know about you? I enjoy motorbike touring and I am an active member of an archery and shooting club, where I regularly participate in competitions. I also jog every day.
