Vysus and ModuSpec combine expertise to strengthen rig energy and emissions performance

Advancing rig energy performance

Vysus Group and ModuSpec are combining their respective expertise to strengthen how energy and emissions performance is considered as part of contractor due diligence, rig selection and supply-chain management.

The collaboration brings together Vysus’ expertise in greenhouse gas emissions, energy management and environmental compliance with ModuSpec’s extensive knowledge of rig systems, inspection, assurance and operational performance.

Together, the approach draws on ModuSpec’s 40 years of experience in rig inspection and assurance and Vysus’ 25 years of experience in emissions and energy management.

Vysus and ModuSpec are continuing to develop the tools and methodologies used to translate these complementary capabilities into practical assessments that can support operators and drilling contractors, while providing valuable insight for investors, owners and other stakeholders.

The approach draws upon established frameworks and requirements including ISO 50001, the GHG Protocol, IPIECA guidance, NSTA expectations, Classification Society specifications, environmental regulations, codes and recognised industry standards.

The objective is to integrate energy efficiency, emissions and environmental performance into established rig assurance and contractor management processes, rather than treating them as a separate sustainability exercise.

For operators and other contracting organisations, this provides a structured means of considering energy and emissions performance during contractor due diligence, rig selection, inspection and ongoing performance management.

A compliant and energy-efficient contractor can contribute towards reducing supply-chain Scope 3 emissions and operational expenditure, while also helping the contracting organisation demonstrate that environmental considerations and commitments arising from Environmental Impact Assessment, environmental permits and other regulatory obligations are being effectively managed.

There is an equally important benefit for the drilling contractor. Assessing the way a rig generates and uses energy can identify opportunities to reduce fuel consumption, Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and operating costs, while demonstrating strong environmental and energy performance to existing and prospective clients.

Ian Thomas, Senior Principal Consultant at Vysus Group, said: “The foundations of this approach are well established. It brings together ModuSpec’s 40 years of rig inspection and assurance experience with Vysus’ 25 years of experience in emissions and energy management.

“What is particularly valuable is combining ModuSpec’s detailed knowledge of rigs, their systems and operational performance with Vysus’ expertise in emissions, energy management and environmental compliance.

“That allows us to integrate energy and emissions considerations into existing rig assurance and contractor management processes. The opportunity is to create value for both parties. Contractors can reduce fuel use, emissions and operating costs, while operators benefit from improved supply-chain performance and a contribution towards their Scope 3 and environmental objectives.”

Liam Pirie, ModuSpec’s Business Development Director, said: “For 40 years, ModuSpec has worked with operators and drilling contractors to provide assurance around the condition, capability and performance of drilling assets. This collaboration builds on that experience by bringing energy and emissions considerations into the rig assurance process in a practical way.

“By combining our inspection and operational knowledge with Vysus’ specialist expertise, we can help clients gain a more rounded understanding of rig performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency alongside operational assurance.”
